The Basics

What Is an IBC Tote?

An Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tote is a reusable industrial container for storing and transporting liquids and granular materials. It consists of a blow-molded HDPE plastic bottle inside a welded galvanized steel cage, mounted on a pallet base. The standard 275-gallon model replaces five 55-gallon drums while using less floor space.

IBC totes are used across every industry that handles bulk liquids — food and beverage, chemical manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints, and more. They are also increasingly popular for residential applications like rainwater collection, aquaponics, and emergency water storage.

The HDPE bottle is FDA-approved for food contact, resistant to most chemicals, and can withstand years of repeated use. The steel cage protects against impact, enables forklift handling, and allows stacking up to two totes high when full. A standard 2-inch butterfly valve at the bottom provides controlled dispensing.
