Why Professional IBC Cleaning Matters

Proper cleaning is the difference between a reusable asset and a liability. Residual contamination can compromise your products, violate health and safety regulations, create chemical reactions with new contents, and render an otherwise functional container unusable. Professional cleaning eliminates these risks while extending the useful life of every tote.

Our facility processes over 500 IBC totes per month through our cleaning line. We handle everything from food-grade containers that previously held juice concentrates and cooking oils to industrial totes that stored solvents, adhesives, and agricultural chemicals. Each tote receives a cleaning protocol tailored to its contamination profile.

DIY cleaning is an option for simple applications, but it lacks the consistency, documentation, and quality assurance of professional reconditioning. Our process uses controlled temperatures, calibrated chemical concentrations, timed wash cycles, and standardized inspection protocols. Every cleaned tote meets the same quality standard — every time.

The environmental benefits are significant. Our closed-loop water recycling system reduces freshwater consumption by over 80% compared to single-pass cleaning. All wastewater is treated before discharge. Our cleaning agents are 100% biodegradable and non-toxic. Cleaning and reusing a tote consumes roughly 15% of the energy required to manufacture a new one.

Triple-Wash Cleaning Process

Stage 1: Alkaline Wash

  • Heated to 150-160 degrees F for maximum effectiveness
  • Biodegradable alkaline detergent at calibrated concentration
  • High-pressure rotating spray ball provides 360-degree interior coverage
  • Dissolves organic residues: oils, proteins, sugars, food products
  • Breaks down biofilm and microbial contamination
  • Cycle time: 15 minutes per tote

Stage 2: Acid Rinse

  • Citric acid solution neutralizes alkaline residue
  • Dissolves mineral scale, hard water deposits, and rust stains
  • Brightens and restores HDPE surface appearance
  • Removes inorganic chemical residue that alkaline wash cannot address
  • Food-safe citric acid — no harsh mineral acids used
  • Cycle time: 10 minutes per tote

Stage 3: Freshwater Rinse

  • High-pressure potable water final rinse
  • Removes all traces of cleaning chemicals
  • Rinse water pH tested to verify neutrality (target 6.5-7.5)
  • Visual inspection during rinse for remaining residue
  • Tote drained and placed in drying area with valve and cap open
  • Air-dried for minimum 4 hours before reassembly

Additional Reconditioning Services

Valve Replacement

New 2" butterfly or ball valve with fresh EPDM gaskets. Leak-tested before approval. Camlock adapters available on request.

Cage Repair

Hydraulic straightening of bent bars, wire-brush rust removal, zinc-rich primer application. Severely corroded sections are cut and re-welded.

Pallet Replacement

Damaged or rotten pallet bases swapped for new wood, HDPE plastic, or galvanized steel bases. Load-tested for forklift handling.

Pressure Testing

Every reconditioned tote is filled to capacity with water and held for 2 hours. Zero-leak tolerance. Valve torque verified with calibrated wrench.

Custom Labeling

Apply your company labels, hazard diamonds, GHS placards, and handling instructions. Permanent adhesive or magnetic options available.

Full Documentation

Cleaning certificate, reconditioning report, pressure test log, and before/after photos. Essential for ISO, FDA, and OSHA compliance audits.

Our Closed-Loop Water System

Water is the most critical resource in IBC cleaning, and we treat it with the respect it deserves. Our closed-loop water recycling system captures, filters, treats, and reuses wash water — reducing our freshwater consumption by over 80% compared to single-pass cleaning facilities.

The system works in stages: used wash water flows into a settling tank where heavy solids drop out. It then passes through oil-water separators to remove fats and petroleum residues. A multi-media filtration bank removes fine particulates. Finally, UV sterilization eliminates microbial contamination. The treated water is returned to the wash bays for reuse.

Concentrated wastewater that cannot be recycled is collected in a holding tank and tested for pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and heavy metals before being released to the municipal treatment system. We comply with all local pretreatment discharge permits and maintain detailed records of every discharge event.

This system processes approximately 5,000 gallons of water per day while consuming only 1,000 gallons of fresh municipal water. The remaining 4,000 gallons are recycled — saving roughly 1 million gallons of freshwater per year compared to a traditional once-through cleaning operation.

FAQ

Cleaning FAQ

Can you clean totes that held hazardous chemicals?
Yes, but hazardous residue cleaning requires specialized protocols. We handle EPA-regulated waste containment, manifest documentation, and proper disposal of contaminated rinse water. Additional fees apply. Contact us with the specific chemical name and SDS for a quote.
Will cleaning remove all odors?
Our triple-wash process eliminates most odors. However, some substances (solvents, strong fragrances, certain foods) can permanently permeate HDPE plastic. If residual odor is detected after cleaning, we will disclose it and recommend appropriate alternative uses for the tote.
Can you clean totes I own and return them to me?
Absolutely. Bring your totes to our facility or arrange pickup. We clean, recondition (if requested), and hold them for your pickup or deliver back to your location. This is a popular service for businesses that rotate their own tote inventory.
Do you provide food-grade cleaning certification?
Yes. For totes that had food-grade history and are cleaned for continued food-grade use, we provide a cleaning certificate documenting the agents used, temperatures, contact times, and final rinse water testing. This satisfies most FDA and FSMA documentation requirements.
What chemicals do you use for cleaning?
All our cleaning agents are biodegradable and non-toxic. We use a proprietary alkaline formulation for Stage 1 and food-grade citric acid for Stage 2. Safety Data Sheets are available upon request. We do not use chlorinated solvents, caustic soda, or any agents that leave harmful residue.
