Understanding IBC Tote Sizes
Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), also called IBC totes, come in several standard sizes. The most common in North America is the 275-gallon (1,040-liter) model, followed by the 330-gallon (1,249-liter) and the larger 550-gallon (2,082-liter) model. All share a similar design: a blow-molded HDPE plastic bottle enclosed in a galvanized steel cage, mounted on a pallet base.
The size you need depends on your storage volume requirements, available floor space, forklift capacity, and transport constraints. Below you will find detailed specifications for each standard size.

Choosing the Right Size
275 Gallon — The Industry Standard
The 275-gallon IBC tote is the most widely used size in North America. Its 48" x 40" footprint matches a standard pallet, making it compatible with almost every warehouse racking system, truck bed, and shipping container. If you are unsure which size to choose, the 275-gallon is almost always the safe bet. It is the most readily available in both new and used markets, and replacement parts are universally available.
330 Gallon — More Volume, Same Footprint
The 330-gallon model offers approximately 20% more capacity than the 275-gallon while maintaining the same 48" x 40" footprint. The extra volume comes from the taller height (53" vs 46"). This makes it ideal when you need more storage capacity but cannot expand your floor space. Be aware that the taller height may affect stackability and clearance in some racking systems.
550 Gallon — Maximum Capacity
The 550-gallon model doubles the capacity of a standard tote. It has a wider 48" x 48" footprint and stands 62" tall. This size is less common and typically used for large-volume storage in industrial settings. Due to its size and weight when full (nearly 4,800 lbs), it requires heavy-duty handling equipment. Availability of used 550-gallon totes is more limited than smaller sizes.
Pallet Base Types
Wood Pallet
Most common and economical option. Suitable for single-trip and light-duty use. Not ideal for outdoor storage due to moisture damage potential.
Plastic Pallet
More durable than wood, moisture-resistant, and easier to clean. Preferred for food-grade applications and environments requiring high hygiene standards.
Steel Pallet
Most durable option with the highest load rating. Ideal for heavy-duty applications, long-term outdoor storage, and situations requiring maximum stackability.
