Critical point: All standard IBC tote bottles are made from food-grade HDPE plastic. The "food-grade" or "industrial" classification is not about the container itself — it is about what was previously stored in it.

A brand-new IBC tote fresh from the factory is inherently food-grade because the HDPE plastic meets FDA standards for food contact. But once that tote has been used to store industrial chemicals, it is reclassified as industrial-grade, even if the plastic itself has not chemically changed. This is because HDPE can absorb trace amounts of certain chemicals, making it unsuitable for food storage.

Safety Guidelines

Never use an industrial-grade tote for food or potable water storage, regardless of how well it has been cleaned.
Always ask about previous contents when purchasing used IBC totes.
If the previous contents are unknown, treat the tote as industrial-grade.
Food-grade totes should be cleaned before use even if they appear clean — residue from food materials can harbor bacteria.
Mark or label food-grade and industrial totes clearly to prevent mix-ups in your facility.
When in doubt, buy new or reconditioned totes with documented food-grade history.
